Understand

Trieste (Triest in German, Trst in Slavic languages) has 250,000 inhabitants. It is situated into the middle of several traffic flows since eighteenth century: German middle Europe at north, Slavic masses and the Balkans at east, Italy and then Latin countries at west, whole Mediterranean Sea at south.

Its artistic relevance is then connected to its location. You can find some old Roman architecture (a small theater near the sea, a nice arch into old city and a Roman museum with some interest if you've never been before to anywhere like this), Austrian empire architecture across the city centre (similar to stuff you can find in Vienna) and a nice atmosphere metissage of Mediterranean styles as Trieste was a very important port during the 18th century.

See

You can find a very big synagogue (1900, circa), Serb-orthodox and Greek-orthodox churches, a lot of Protestant churches and so on.

The most beautiful views of Trieste could be seen from three different places:

  1. from the beautiful Piazza Unità, the central square in front of the sea
  2. from Miramare Castle, an Absburg romantic building created by the brother of Franz Josef
  3. from up the hills, from Prosecco / Proseck village which is at the end of Carso plateau

Across the countryside you can find small beautiful farms where you will find beautiful different kinds of home-made salami, cheese and ham, and a characteristic red wine. And maybe you can find some nice places to sleep, too.
