Thiruvananthapuram (formerly known as Trivandrum) is the capital (pop. 826,225 in 1991) of the state of Kerala, India. The city is part of a district, also called Thiruvananthapuram, one of the 14 districts of Kerala.

By Air

  • Thiruvananthapuram has an international airport, with direct flights from the Middle East, Singapore, Maldives and Sri Lanka. It is therefore considered as the doorway to the tourism rich state of Kerala. And is served by Air-India (http://www.airindia.com/page.asp?pageid=126), among others.

By Train

The central railway station is located at Thampanoor in the heart of the city, 8 km from the airport. Very well connected and serviced by rail to all major cities in India like Kochi, Kanyakumari, Kozhikode (Calicut), Madras, Bangalore, Bombay, New Delhi, Calcutta. Trivandrum is the first major city along second longest train route in the world, Kanyakumari to Jammu.

By Bus

The long distance bus station is located next door to the railway station. Buses ply to all major towns and villages in the state as well as with the big cities like Kochi, Bangalore, Chennai (Madras), Kozhikode, Coimbatore and Madurai. The city bus stand is located 1 km away at East Fort, near the Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

By Road

Thiruvananthapuram is well connected to other cities Kochi, Kozhikode, Madras, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai by road.

  • Bus - local bus service system is cheapest way get around Thiruvananthapuram. But not all route descriptions are in English, route descriptions on the buses are manly in Malayalam, the official language of Keralam.
  • Autoricksha - This is a cheap way of transportation facility between attractions.
  • Taxi - Local taxis are also available at cheap rates.
  • Car - There are many Car rental companies offering cars with drivers or self drive.
  • Two wheelers - especially scooters and motorcycles are the favoured means of personal transportation on the roads.
  • Walk - Many places of attractions are near by other so you could walk between them.
