London/South

From Imakoopedia

South London is that part of London which is south of the River Thames. 'Saff Londoners' are often seen by other Londoners as a different breed, and occasional stories surface of octogenarians who have never been north (meaning north of the river).

Areas

South London is itself made up of several quite distinct areas, of which more can be found in the following articles:

Get around

In general, the advice given under 'Get around' for London holds good for South London.

However one significant difference is that the underground or tube system, so useful elsewhere in London, does not serve South London at all well. Instead the area is served by a dense network of National Rail surface lines connecting South London (and much of Southern England beyond) with Central London. Whilst this network's coverage is good, frequencies are not up to those on the underground.

Another difference is the presence on some streets in South London of trams. The recently built Tramlink system links Wimbledon with Croydon and onward to other south-eastern suburbs of little interest to visitors.

Travelcards are valid on both Tramlink and the National Rail network (within Greater London) and the Transport for London Journey Planner (http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/index.htm) can plan your journey on them (as well as local buses).
